A-NEW Stars, Stripes, and Strings

About This Activity

On Veterans Day, we explore music that commemorates the sacrifices of American soldiers in serving their country. Gould's American Salute celebrates the most comforting of all war songs, "When Johnny Comes Marching Home." From John Williams score to Saving Private Ryan, "Hymn to the Fallen" expresses what we all feel. In "The Wound Dresser," John Adams sets Walt Whitman's poem that immortalizes a too long unsung hero of the Civil War. Richard Rodgers' Victory at Sea shows that a Broadway composer can be symphonically descriptive. Though hardly American, Tchaikovsky makes an ultimate tribute to battling soldiers in his 1812 Overture. Participants may obtain tickets to the Rochester Symphony Orchestra and Chorale concert at a discount. Cosponsored with Rochester Symphony Orchestra and Chorale. Instructor: Jere Lantz
