About This Activity

The LITERACY 5000 is part of a national tradition sponsored by the IDA (generally referred to as Dyslexia Dash). It aims to promote recognition of dyslexia and the many efficient and effective strategies for helping with literacy issues. Come and celebrate this wonderful tradition with us!! We also have a huge raffle - expo - and many exciting activities and a costume contest! Awards, certificates as well as medals of completion for kids.

Registering a team of 5 or more kids (ages 15 and under)? If so, please log into http://literacy5000-2013.eventbrite.com. Kids in a group of 5 or more will pay only $12. A group of 10 or more, each pays only $10. After October 1st, prices increase by $4. To qualify for a team discount, all students must belong to the same scout group, same school group, or same ball team.

Check out the fun we have!! More photos are on our website home page.

We invite you to come dressed in a costume - this will add greatly to our fun and excitement. PLUS - prizes will be presented for the best individual costume, the best literacy theme costume (e.g., favorite storybook character, author), and the best team literacy theme costume (e.g., from Cat & the Hat (thing 1, thing 2), Little Women, 7 Dwarfs).

We'll have many kids activities - use your raffle tickets for these! We'll have a jumper, face painting, and a special event with storyteller, Karen Rae Kraut. She'll be doing dancing, stories, activities, and more. All children attending will receive a free book.

Our Race Director, Greg English is setting up our course accuracy and timing! It will be a certified course with professional timing - an opportunity to set your personal best!

We will be running/walking within beautiful Fairmont Park. This Olmsted-designed park (he also designed Central Park and Prospect Park in New York City) features rose gardens, several lakes, a bandshell, and a beautiful restored historic boathouse. Our 5K Dash is to promote awareness of dyslexia and other learning difficulties and to raise funds to aid on-going programs in four major areas: information, referrals, conferences, workshops. Literacy issues (poor reading and writing skills) are a national public health concern because of the impact they have on social skills, employment, and especially self-esteem.

You may register as team. Individual in each team still may compete for prizes, but all members of team receive a special medal. Be sure to include your team name on the registration form.

We are selling raffle tickets which may be used for several different items and activities. These may be used for our raffle or for our activities such as face painting.

$30 through September 30
