Abe Alvarez, 2nd year Head Baseball Coach (Long Beach State, 2nd Round Boston Red Sox) Alvarez had an outstanding three-year career with the Dirtbags, posting an overall record of 23-5 over three years, while striking out 195 total batters. After pitching three innings as a freshman, Alvarez earned a spot in the rotation as a sophomore and dominated the conference, earning Big West Pitcher of the Year honors as well as second-team All-America honors, posting a 12-3 record with a 2.72 ERA and striking out 89 batters while walking just 27. The next season, Alvarez shared Big West Pitcher of the Year honors with Jered Weaver, as the pair was two-thirds of a trio that all reached the major leagues. Alvarez was again named a second-team All-American, posting an 11-2 record with a 2.35 ERA over 122.2 innings, striking out 102 and helping to lead Long Beach State to its first-ever Super Regional appearance. Drafted following the 2003 season in the second round by the Boston Red Sox, Alvarez was a fast-moving prospect that made his MLB debut with the Red Sox in 2004, becoming the youngest member on that team to earn a World Series ring. Alvarez would spend two more years with the Red Sox, appearing in three seasons with the major league ballclub. Currently, Abe is the head coach at St. Bernard High School with an overall record of 23-25. In 2014, Alvarez led the Vikings to a 3rd place (13-15, 7-5) finish in the Camino Real League, earning a playoff berth as a wild card team. So far in 2015 the Vikings are in 3rd place (10-10, 2-2) having recently won the AA St. Paul Easter Tournament.
