Will Running on Hard Surfaces Injure My Dog?

Running With Puppies

Puppies' bone growth plates continue to develop up to 18 months old. At about a year, the bone growth plates seal closed. After the bone platelets close, injury or damage due to pavement impact is greatly reduced.

Don't make your puppy a full-time running partner until they are over a year old and possibly up to 18 months, depending on their development.  It's best to keep your puppies from running regularly on any hard surfaces.

How To Run on Pavement Safely

Don't set out for a 7-mile run on the pavement on your first outing with your dog. Find a trail and do a short run. If pavement is the only option, do a walk-run-walk routine. Walk a little to get warmed up, run for a few minutes, and then walk again. Continue the pattern.

After a few weeks, you can shorten the walks and run more.

Make sure a vet checks your dog for hip dysplasia.  Regular stress can lead to hip dysplasia.  Added stress will cause deterioration at a much quicker rate.

Consistency Is Key

Your dog will benefit from a regular running routine. Your dog can run on hard surfaces as long as you have gradually built up his muscle and ligament strength to deal with the stress put on his body.

Before you set out for a run make sure to properly warm up. Don't forget to cool down afterwards too. Help your pet stretch. Yes, dogs need stretching too. Have them sit or lie down, help them touch their nose to their hip, stretch out the front and back legs, and lightly massage their paws.

Watch for Injuries

Look out for signs of slowing and soreness, especially in older dogs. They only have a few short years in comparison to humans. Run moderate distances and on softer surfaces as they age to take care of their joints.

Make sure to give your dog plenty of water and recovery time between runs. If you notice he seems slightly lethargic, go for a walk instead. Dogs need exercise, but it's your job to make sure they stay healthy and safe.
