Open-air Activities in the Fall are Ideal for Family Time
The Coastwise Mile was organized as a way for you to spend quality time with your family and friends while serving the local community. The scenic one-mile footrace will take place along the La Jolla coastline on October 3, 2009.
Support your kids as they compete in a safe and friendly environment, either with you or as you cheer them on. Show your children the satisfaction of setting goals and achieving them, and encourage physical fitness in your family while fostering a sense of community and involvement.
Something for Everyone
At one mile in length, the USA Track and Field certified course is a manageable distance for all ages. The numerous entry divisions allow you to customize your race according to your family's preferences. Parents with young children or infants are invited to take place in the Baby Jogger Division. If your dog is a family member too, bring the leash and race together in the Mutt Mile.
Age divisions allow you to compete against others of similar athletic ability, or walk and connect with peers. Tot Trots permit even the youngest competitors to test their athletic ability on short courses ranging from 50 to 500 yards. The event culminates in a Corporate Relay to inspire team competition among local companies, running clubs and high schools.
Encourage Your Children's Athleticism and Creativity
The Tot Trot and Youth Division allow them to put their bodies to the test, while a costume contest for their canine companions stretches the capabilities of their right brain and gets them in the spirit for Halloween later that month.
The running event will be paired with a festival-style expo from 7 to 10 a.m. in the scenic Ellen Browning Scripps Park. Face painting, balloon animals and other children's activities will keep your kids entertained while you check out the latest running gear and nutrition tips, grab a bite to eat, and browse all the great vendors.
Teach Your Children the Value of Giving Back to Your Community
A portion of the Coastwise Mile event proceeds will benefit the Scripps Park Project and the San Diego Humane Society & SPCA. The Scripps Park Project is a group of local citizens whose mission is to develop and implement a long-term comprehensive plan to preserve, restore, and enhance Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Park, incorporating extensive community involvement.
The San Diego Humane Society provides vital services to animals and people alike through sheltering and adopting animals, providing positive reinforcement behavior training classes, investigating animal cruelty and neglect, providing adult and youth education programs, sharing animals through Pet-Assisted Therapy, and rescuing animals in emergency situations.
Take this opportunity to promote an active lifestyle and teach your children the value of outdoor activity. An open-air fun run and event expo is an excellent way for you and your children to be carefree. Children learn from their parents' examples. For their well-being as much as for yours, head outside and have fun as a family.
