Play Games like Simon SaysShow your children a variety of movements like hopping on one foot, jumping jacks, touching their toes, sit-ups, push-ups, and planks and play a game of Simon Says. Try to perform each exercise for five to 10 seconds and count out loud with your children.
Do a workout video with your kids. Check out your local cable network to see if there are any children's exercise videos that may even be free with your service. We just discovered this and my son had so much fun doing a video. The Wii Fit is another option that provides a decent aerobic, balance, and strengthening workout for you and your children if you are stuck in the house.
Open GymCheck out your local fitness center or YMCA to see when the gym is open and go in and play. Do relay races, play basketball, or even take advantage of a family fun time, if available. Our local YMCA just started a free, 90-minute family fun time that we have been doing each week. It is staff run, but parents are also encouraged to participate, with tons of toys and equipment available to the kids.
The key to stay active with your kids is to make it a part of your daily life. As the parent, set an example for your children; takes steps to a healthier lifestyle. Turn off the electronics and get outside with your kids to keep active. You'll be surprised how much fun you can have with them.
