What's Included

“A conservationist is one who is humbly aware that with each stroke [of the axe] he is writing his signature on the face of the land.” Aldo Leopold Proper tree care is crucial to a healthy, beautiful and inviting yard. Keeping that shade tree's canopy vigorous lets you enjoy a lovely nap in the afternoon heat. Quality pruning allows landscaped shrubs to put their energy into beautiful flowers rather than unsightly wounds. And knowing a dangerous branch lets you avoid damage to your house or others out enjoying the yard. The Backyard Arborist course will focus on learning hands-on skills that you can take home to your yard to help ensure the vigour and beauty of your trees and shrubs. Over the four hours, participants will learn proper pruning techniques to help maintain healthy, attractive and safe trees; transplanting methods for ensuring healthy root growth with little die-back; and how to plant so that your young trees and shrubs will thrive and prosper. These skills will help gardeners of any variety enjoy, enhance, and improve their yards, hedges, and gardens when at home or at the cottage. The course runs from 9am until 1pm on Saturday, November 4th at the Macphail Woods Nature Centre on the Macphail Homestead in Orwell. The total cost for the course will be $45.

About This Organizer

The Macphail Woods Ecological Forestry Project is an initiative of the Environmental Coalition of Prince Edward Island. It combines protection of the natural area along the streams with wildlife enhancement, forest stewardship, watershed protection, environmental education and ecological research.

Since 1992 we have been offering summer camps for youth. Over the years the camps have grown immensely and become one of our most successful education programs. The goal of our camps is to help children discover their own place in nature. We spend the entire week outdoors, bird watching, tracking, making art, playing games, observing insects and getting wet and dirty. Each camp is an adventure for the children but also an incredible educational experience.

Our camp director, Eric Edward (naturecamp@macphailwoods.org), has lead the camps for the past 14 years. This year, Eric will be assisted by, environmental educator, Daniel McRae and one summer student. We work hard to give the campers an exciting but safe week and the small camp size, high teacher to camper ratio and years of experience are important factors in accomplishing this goal. Leaders are trained in first aid.
