What's Included

Bushcraft is the art of living comfortably in nature. Learnng to light a fire, construct a shelter or cook outdoors are just a few of the essential skills that connect us to the land and remind us of our dependance on nature. Intro to bushcraft ecology is a 2 day overnight course that will provide students with confidence, comfort and respect for the natural world around us. Over the excursion, partipants will be taught fire lighting with matches, mag stick, and friction, knot tying, plant and animal identification, pruning skills, tracking, wild food foraging, shelter building, knife and hatchet safety, fire safety, outdoor cookery, wood carving and more. We believe that it is impossible to leave no trace but with sound ecological knowledge and skills the trace we leave can improve the health of our wild spaces. Through skillful pruning, proper harvesting techniques and plant identification, students will hopefully develop a profound respect for our infinitely complex ecosystems; leaving the forest a better place. This course would be excellent for educators, camp instructors, parents, anyone who likes the sweet smell of campfires on a fall night. This weekend course will run from saturday morning at 8 am till sunday afternoon at 3pm. Meals will be included in the course registration fees, as well as use of knives, cooking gear, magnesium sticks, binoculars, pruning shears and saws. Participants will have the opportunity to build a shelter but should also bring their own tent for the overnight stay. The cost for the course will come to a total of $225.

About This Organizer

The Macphail Woods Ecological Forestry Project is an initiative of the Environmental Coalition of Prince Edward Island. It combines protection of the natural area along the streams with wildlife enhancement, forest stewardship, watershed protection, environmental education and ecological research.

Since 1992 we have been offering summer camps for youth. Over the years the camps have grown immensely and become one of our most successful education programs. The goal of our camps is to help children discover their own place in nature. We spend the entire week outdoors, bird watching, tracking, making art, playing games, observing insects and getting wet and dirty. Each camp is an adventure for the children but also an incredible educational experience.

Our camp director, Eric Edward (naturecamp@macphailwoods.org), has lead the camps for the past 14 years. This year, Eric will be assisted by, environmental educator, Daniel McRae and one summer student. We work hard to give the campers an exciting but safe week and the small camp size, high teacher to camper ratio and years of experience are important factors in accomplishing this goal. Leaders are trained in first aid.
