"How did this old bird pull out of there (Iwo Jima) unscathed? That is a question we survivors have asked ourselves all of our lives." -Marshall Harris
Minnesota veteran, Marshall Harris, recounts his experience as a Marine in the 2nd Armored Amphibian Tank Battalion on Saipan (6/15/44), Tinian (7/24/44) and the 36 day battle for Iwo Jima beginning February 19, 1945. His battalion's mission was to make the first wave providing fire power all the way to the beach and once ashore, assist the infantry with additional fire power where needed. Marshall Harris enlisted in the Marines following his high school graduation in 1943. He was assigned to the 2nd Armored Amphibian Tank Battalion as a radioman and a bow machine gun operator.
