What's Included

Ospreys have returned to the Merrimack and thrive on the marine life found beneath the water surface. In this way, these amazing birds understand the interconnectedness of land and sea as their life depends on it. In this spirit, we created a new program in 2013 that offers a little of the best of what we offer, ashore and afloat. Each day we’ll set out in search of new landscapes, and return home with new tales of the places we have been and the things we have seen. Along the way we’ll do a ton of exploring, a bunch of mucking, a dash of whale watching, a spot of fishing, a bit of rowing, and a smidgeon of fire building, to name just a few. Each week typically includes a visit to the following locales: --Isles of Shoals, a rocky archipelago located 5 miles off the coast of Portsmouth, NH --Jeffreys Ledge, an enormous underwater ridge about 25 miles out, the summer feeding ground of several whale species, including humpacks and minkes -- Nearshore, great fishing spots within eye sight of land, perfect for catching striped bass, bluefish, mackerel, flounder and lobsters. -- Plum Island and the Great Marsh, a classic barrier beach system, home to Parker River National Wildlife Refuge and a number of rare plants, animals and birds -- Lowell’s Boat Shop, a working museum on the banks of the Merrimack River, home to a fleet of traditional wooden dories just waiting for us to row -- Four Rock, a wild and forested upland near the headwaters of the Little River in Newbury. Please Note: This program meets in a few different places and utilizes a few different boats throughout the week. Prior to the start of the program, you will receive a detailed itinerary with locations and addresses. From downtown Newburyport, no location is more than 15 minutes away.
