New York City Debate Club is the city's debate team for middle school students! Admission is open to all students, grades 5th – 8th. For students who do not have a debate team at their school or students who would like more advanced instruction and opportunities, then NYC Debate Club is for you! We meet up to 4 Saturdays each month for practices and local debate tournaments. Breakfast and lunch is provided for all our local tournaments on Saturdays which usually run from 8:30am-4:00pm. We have a middle school tournament each month, 1-2 debate practices each month (10:00am-12:00pm) and an optional high school tournament for advanced middle school debaters. SAMPLE MONTHLY SCHEDULE First Saturday of the Month - Local NYC Middle School Debate Tournament (8:00am-4:00pm) Second Saturday of the Month - Local NYC High School Debate Tournament (8:00am-6:00pm) Third Saturday of the Month - Practice (10:00am-12:00pm) Fourth Saturday of the Month - Practice (10:00am-12:00pm) SAMPLE ACTIVITIES Lab The debate club experience is centered around small lab groups, which are sorted by experience, debate format, and skill level. These groups, led by a dedicated set of instructors, are like a home base throughout the program. Core Lectures Every practice, all students will attend at least two lectures on core skills topics (public speaking, research, refutation, philosophy, civics, current events, affirming, negating, framework, and weighing & evidence comparison, and more!). These are designed to provide a solid foundation in the technical areas that are essential to competitive success. All lectures will be coupled with small group drills with a mentor focused on implementing each new concept.
