Organizers for Sarah T. Reed’s Second Chance 5K Run/Walk are calling for sponsors and runners to participate in the event which will benefit Sarah T. Reed High School as well as create a fund in hopes to give high school drop outs a second chance to participate in educational programs. The Second Chance 5K Run/Walk will take place August 10th, 2013 at Joe W. Brown Memorial Park, located at 10900 Lake Forest Blvd., New Orleans, LA 70127. The event will feature food, music and give-a-ways.
Michael McKenzie, Sarah. T. Reed High School’s Principal and creator of the event said, “As a Louisiana native, my passion for education comes from seeing firsthand the struggles that my young mother faced as a result of having dropped-out of school. This effort is one that intently looks to help end the cycle of poverty and demonstrates Sarah T. Reed High School’s commitment to be culturally-responsive in the educational landscape of New Orleans in educating the whole-child and building resilient citizens.”
According to a 2012 Greater New Orleans Data Center report Building an Inclusive, High-Skill Workforce for New Orleans Next Economy , 14,000 youth between the ages of 16 and 24 in the New Orleans metro are neither enrolled in school nor employed. Additionally, studies show that young people who graduate from high school are less likely to commit violent crimes.
With this effort, Sarah T. Reed High School is working to raise funds to create a program that recaptures high school drop outs and provides them with industry-based skills so they can find higher-paying job opportunities.
Pre-registration costs for the race are $20 per person. Race day registrations will be accepted from 7 to 8:30 a.m., with a registration cost of $30. Sponsorship opportunities are available for as little as $250!
