What's Included

The Vietnam War began on August 4, 1964 with an alleged attack by North Vietnamese torpedo boats upon two of our destroyers in the Gulf of Tonkin. President Johnson reported it to Congress the next day, which stampeded Congress into passing the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution two days later, giving Johnson legal authority to wage full-scale war in Vietnam. Johnson’s report was a lie. Mr. White knew it because as a naval officer in the Pacific, he had read the secret messages from the destroyers on CinCPAc, which said their sonar was probably producing false images and there were no torpedoes fired at them. In 1967 he wrote a letter to a newspaper exposing the lie. He wanted to undercut the Tonkin Resolution and thereby end the war. It was an act of conscience. Mr. White’s letter was picked up by the wire services and other media and became an international sensation. He expected to go to prison for revealing classified information, but that didn’t happen. Nevertheless the lie continued and more than 58,000 died for Johnson’s lie.
