The National Flight Academy (NFA) offers one of the most exciting and immersive learning experiences available in the world – inspiring 7th – 12th graders to take a serious interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education in an aviation-themed adventure aboard a massive, land-locked aircraft carrier.
NFA’s overnight experiences are held onboard our stationary aircraft carrier AMBITION (CVT-11) where everyone eats on the Mess Deck, sleeps in Junior Officer Staterooms, plan missions in our Joint Intelligence Centers (JICs) and Joint Operations Centers (JOCs), and executes missions in our 30 networked simulators located in the Hangar Bay. These simulators represent the most extensive network outside of the Department of the Defense and are utilized by participants for non-combat, humanitarian missions such as search and rescue, disaster relief, air racing, and fire-fighting.
This highly engaging and visually stimulating venue provides the realistic rumble of the ship’s mock engines and the sound of faux flight operations on the simulated flight deck amid scenically treated bulkheads as 1MC announcements call the crew to action using state-of-the-art flight simulation technology. For many students, the experience is undeniably lifelike: “There’s no simulation about this; this is real stuff.”
