IODs, or International One Designs, are a one-design class of sailboats raced on Nantucket on Wednesdays evenings and Sundays. IODs are 33' LOA keelboats that draw just over 5', and are sailed with a crew of five. Fleets are raced all over the world, including in Maine and Bermuda. The Nantucket fleet is competitive and looking for crew members. NCS Sailors ages 12 and older are invited to participate in weekly racing, sailing with experienced crew members, on Wednesday evenings from 4:30pm - 8pm, as part of the weekly PHRF series. This racing is free for NCS sailors. Sailors must be in Teen Green (have completed multiple sessions), 420 Blue, 420 Red or Keelboat Blue class to be eligible. Sailors will be placed on different boats and will learn how to crew on an IOD - including main and jib trim, foredeck and spinnaker work. This is an excellent opportunity for young sailors interested in regular keelboat racing and learning racing skills outside of regular NCS programming. Committed sailors will likely be invited to participate in the Sunday IOD series as well. Sailors may register for as many or as few weeks as they are interested.
