5 Field players and a goalie per team
Maximum 8 players per team
Additional Information
SURFBOARD WATER POLO
Playing dimensions – 30m long
•
Cones will indicate: Goal line, 4m line, and halfway line.
•
Teams will include five field players (each on a surfboard) and one goalkeeper on a surfboard.
•
Time for each game will be two -12 minute running time quarters with three minute break in between.
•
Substitutes can be made after a goal or at anytime from the mauka side corner at each teams goal line with a hand touch.
•
Players are to remove rings, earrings, watches, etc. and trim fingernails and toenails
•
Play will start with both teams lined up on each goal line. The referee will start play with a whistle and throw the ball at the halfway line. Each team then paddles to the ball.
•
Players may handle the ball with only one hand. Goalkeepers may use two hands within their own four-meter line and may handle the ball off their surfboard in the 4-meter area, but must then return to their surfboard.
•
Goals can be scored only from outside the four meter line and only if two players have
intentionally played the ball. Players may enter the four meter area, but cannot score from there.
•
After a goal each team will line up on its side of the halfway line and the referee will resume
play with a whistle.
•
If a ball goes out of bounds, the goalkeeper will restart play if an attacking player has last touched the ball. A corner throw can be taken at the two-meter line if a defending player has last touched the ball.
•
The referee shall restart play with a jump ball if two players commit a foul simultaneously.
•
The referee will signal a minor foul with a whistle and signal where the foul has taken place.
The ball shall be put in play with a free throw taken quickly (three seconds).
The throw can be taken from where the foul has taken place or further from the goal.
Minor fouls: Results in a free pass by the offended player
Pushing on the goal posts
Taking the ball underwater when touched by an opponent
Touching the ball with both hands
Shooting inside the four -meter area
Wasting time when taking a free throw or a corner throw
Sending the ball outside the playing area
Major fouls: Penalized by removal of the player from play. Players are to paddle to their own
goal line on the ocean side of the course, touch the corner buoy and return to play.
Restricting a player’s movement when taking a throw.
Touching the ball before it leaves the hand of the player taking the throw.
Kicking or hitting another player or attempting to do so. This can also result in permanent
removal from the game with substitution at the referee’s discretion.
A player is allowed three major fouls and then is excluded from further play in the game, but
may be substituted for at the ocean side/goal line buoy.
If the two teams in any match are tied at the end of play then a standard shoot out shall be used to
determine the winner with each team shooting five penalty shots at the goal in alternate succession. The goalies on surfboards will alternate in the same cage.
Each team shall designate five shooters by cap number. The white team shall shoot first. If there is still a tie after five shots, the shootout will continue one shot from each team until one team misses and the other makes its shot.
