Humble Abode to Holistic Habitat: Spa Living

Because our homes are an exterior manifestation of who we are and what we find important, they often reflect our current state of being (ordered, neat, chaotic, cluttered), showcase our personal aesthetic and provide a calming refuge--a sanctuary for respite and replenishment. It is no wonder, then, that the realms of "spa" and "home" are rapidly converging.

The transition from humble abode to holistic habitat is a reflection of our modern lifestyle, in which we're subjected to over-stimulation from our commute, workplace, social commitments and entertainment outlets. "There's little time to step back and do the things important to maintaining balance and well-being," explains Brett Blumenthal, consultant with Gensler, the architecture firm currently designing Concord Spa Resort in the Catskills.

A harmonious solution to this modern-day dilemma is being pioneered by destination spa leaders Miraval and Canyon Ranch: full-time spa living. Integrating a comprehensive wellness component with upscale private condominiums that include a full service spa and fitness center, these spa residences offer tenants invaluable amenities such as lifestyle advisors, restaurants touting health-conscious fare, programs on nutrition and preventative medicine and culinary classes.

But if you're not ready to purchase a spa residence, you can also get a taste of "spa living" by incorporating things like massaging shower heads, hot tubs, water purification units and saunas into your home. Blumenthal suggest you figure out which part of the spa experience you most enjoy and then "focus on those core essentials when creating a personal nurturing environment."

Changes needn't be costly or require elaborate renovations. For instance, you can create a soothing space simply by taking advantage of natural light--select a room prone to maximum sun exposure or increase window size, add throw pillows, or enhance your garden with the trickling refrain of a re-circulating fountain. There is a soothing quality to simplicity.

No matter what path of well-being you select--from placing a down payment on a destination spa condo, adding a sauna off your garage, or just investing time to enjoy an aromatherapy bath in candlelight--when it comes to finding serenity, now more than ever, there's truly no place like home.
