XTERRA Hickory Knob Triathlon
Race the early season XTERRA Triathlon in South Carolina! Hickory Knob State Park in McCormick, SC is hosting XTERRA Hickory Knob. Swim 800 meters in Strom Thurmond Lake, bike 2 loops of the 7.2 mile Lakeview Trail, run 5 miles taking in the Turkey Ridge Loop Trail. Nothing here too technical. Kick off your tri season with some fun! This is a great race for those looking to give off-raod triathlons a try and for those with some time in the dirt!
An XTERRA Weekend-Run the Trails
Make it an XTERRA weekend! On Saturday, March 23, 2012 you can run the trails! As part of the XTERRA Trail Run Series, you can run/race 3.4 miles on the turkey Ridge Loop trail and then, shortly after, run/race 7.2 miles on the Lakeview Trail!
Hickory Knob State Park Resort
Hickory Knob State Park is the host venue for the trail runs and the triathlon. Located on the shores of Strom Thurmond Lake, there is a multitude of activities for those racing, their families and friends. Hickory Knob is located at 1591 Resort Drive, McCormick, SC 29835. It is approximately: 2.5 hours from Atlanta, 1 hour 45 min from Columbia, 3.5 hours from Savannah, and 1 hour 45 min from Greenville, SC. The field is limited to 250 individuals and 15 relay teams (male, female, and coed). There will be wave starts. Wave starts will be determined prior to the race date and posted on the race web site, e-mailed to those registered, and/or this active.com page, as well at packet pick up.
All participants will receive race shirts as long as registered before March 10, 2013 BUT shirt size and availability is not guaranteed to those registering after March 10, 2013.
Hoodies for the first 50 registered
The first 50 registered for the XTERRA triathlon will receive hoodies as well as the other race schwag!!! After the first 50 have registered, additional hoodies may be made available for sale.
Don't want to do the whole race? Come race as a team! Relay teams categories are all female, all male, or coed. Each team member will compete in one of the individual sports. Relay teams must have a minimum of 2 participants. (Yes, one team member can do 2 sports while the other team member does the other sport.)

USA Triathlon Sanctioned Race
This race is being sanctioned with USAT. You, including all relay team members, must be a licensed USA Triathlon member at the time of registration or buy a one-day license to participate for $12.00. Race the Trails and the tri (Individuals only!)

Run Both--Turkey Ridge & Lakeview Trails + the Tri
Run one or both of the Turkey Ridge or Lakeview Loop Trails on Saturday; XTERRA Triathlon on Sunday. The 3.4 mile Turkey Ridge race starts at 7:30 a.m. The 7.2 mile Lakeview race starts 45 minutes (or as close as possible to 45 minutes) after the final person crosses the Turkey Ridge finish line.

This year, we are offering longer trail runs on Saturday, March 23, 2013. Run a heavy 1/2 (14.2 miles); Marathon+ (26.7 miles); or 50K. Refunds and Race Delays
There are no refunds. The race will take place rain or shine BUT the race director reserves the right to modify the course or change the start time of the race for the safety of the participants.
Triathlon packet pick up will be on Sat, March 23, 2013 at Hickory Knob State Park, 1591 Resort Road, McCormick, SC at the Long Cane Convention Center from 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. (or as soon as possible following the trail run awards) and from 4:00 – 6:30 p.m. AND at the race site from 6:45 am – 7:30 a.m. race morning. This is a USAT sanctioned race. ONLY YOU CAN PICK UP YOUR RACE PACKET AND RACE NUMBERS. YOU MUST SHOW YOUR USAT MEMBERSHIP CARD AT THAT TIME OR PURCHASE A ONE DAY USAT MEMBERSHIP!
On line registration with active.com closes Thursday, April 19. Late registration will be available during packet pick up and race morning during packet pick up. There remain a few spots available for both individuals and relay teams but shirt availability is very limited. If you know of someone thinking of racing, get him or her off of the fence and get him or her to register in advance of race morning.
Directions to the race site
From McCormick, SC: Take Hwy. 378 W. and drive 6 mi. Turn right onto Hwy 7. Drive 2 mi. and turn left at the park entrance. The park lodge is approximately 3 miles from the entrance. The transition area is approximately 1.5 miles after the entrance and is in the camping area.
Transition (Open/bike pick up)
Transition will not open before 6:30 a.m. on race morning. If you come early, we'll put you to work! Also, ONLY those racing are allowed in transition! Failure to comply with this may result in your disqualification from the event! You may not pick up your bike post race until all of those racing have completed the bike course and left transition for the run! You must retrieve your own bike...No one can pick it up for you!
THE SWIM -- 800 meters
This is an open water swim. Water temperatures will most likely be around 70F. Though use of wet suits is subject to USA Triathlon rules, we expect that it will be a wetsuit swim. There will be boats and other water safety aid available during the swim but such should not take the place of training. You should be able to swim at least ½ mile before deciding to enter this event. All swimmers will be required to wear swim caps, which will be provided.
THE BIKE -- 14.4 miles
Lakeview Loop Trail: (2 loops) A scenic and somewhat rugged, hiking-biking, single-track, dirt loop-trail. You won’t find any long climbs here, but challenges include close trees, steep slopes, rough ruts, roots, and rocks.
THE RUN -- 5 miles
The run will start and finish at or near the transition area at the campground/lake side. You'll have a run to the Turkey Ridge Loop Trail and then do the Turkey Ridge Trail twice before returning to the transition/finish. Turkey Ridge: this is a twisting, rolling, hiking/biking, single track, dirt, loop trail through mixed pine and hardwood forest. Challenges include moderately steep hills, stream fords without footbridges, and sharp curves, and switch-backs.
Finisher’s awards will be given to all completing the race. The top overall male and female, master’s male and female, and grandmaster male and female winners will receive awards. Awards will also be given to the top 3 male and female triathletes in 14 and under age group and 5 year age groups from 15-70+. Awards will be given to the top 2 male, female, and coed relay teams.
Post Race Party and Awards Ceremony
Be sure to hang around and enjoy a post race food and drinks and Hickory Knob State Park following the race. The awards ceremony will be held as soon as possible following the race. Unclaimed awards will not be mailed.

These will go fast! Hickory Knob is holding reservations for 6 cabins, 15 campsites & 18 lodge rooms arriving March 23, departing March 24.
