Description

The California International Marathon (CIM) was founded in 1983 by the Sacramento Running Association to bring a world-class running event to the Sacramento area. The same course developed then continues to provide runners with a fast, point-to-point, net-downhill marathon.

Tracing an historic route used by the gold miners during the 1849 Gold Rush, the race begins at the Folsom Dam, passes through semi-rural suburbs into bustling midtown Sacramento, and has a spectacular finish in front of the California State Capitol.

The CIM's 26-mile, 385-yard distance is certified and sanctioned by USATF (#CA07004RS), and therefore is a Boston Marathon qualifier and an Olympic Marathon Trials qualifier. It is frequently a regional or national USATF Championship event as well.

The fast course, community support, 85% chance of perfect running weather, experienced and dedicated race management, and $50,000+ prize money attract an international field of elite runners, as well as top age division competitors, fitness runners and first time marathoners.

The event is organized by the Sacramento Running Association (SRA), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Proceeds from all the Sacramento Running Association events benefit youth fitness programs, running venue development & maintenance, and the American River Parkway.

Event Rules

The CIM is a competitive race and not a "fun run." It follows USATF rules and disqualifies runners who do not follow the rules.

  • Absolutely no refunds.
  • The CIM does not offer deferred entries.
  • The CIM does not allow entry transfers.
  • Course is closed at a six hour finish time pace (13:44 minutes per mile). Runners slower than this pace are subject to pedestrian traffic rules and should carry items required for their fluid and nutrition needs. The CIM attempts to keep the finish line open well past this six hour limit, but cannot guarantee finish results, medallions or post-race refreshments for these finishers.
  • DO NOT CROSS THE FINISH LINE unless you started at the official start time and completed the entire course!
  • NO EARLY OR LATE STARTERS! The starting area closes five minutes after the starting gun is fired, so do not be late for the start.
  • The only wheeled vehicles allowed on the course are those of the wheelchair competitors and CIM officials. No pets.
  • NO NON-REGISTERED RUNNERS on the course and NO INDIVIDUAL ASSISTANCE.
