Description
Set for its fourth annual running along the rolling, hilly countryside of northern Vanderburgh County here in southwestern Indiana in the spring of 2013, Evansville's Southern Indiana Classic Marathon & Half Marathon will also be the city's first qualifying event for the 2013 running of the Boston Marathon. At the race's second annual running in 2011, more than 1,000 runners and walkers crossed the finish line in the half marathon alone.
The out-and-back loop course for both the full and the half marathons will take place just miles from the city's downtown, which lies along a U-shaped bend in the Ohio River, giving the city its nickname "River City." Walkers are welcome at both the full marathon and the half marathon, organizers note, adding that half marathon walkers will have 3 hours, 51 minutes to complete the race (which works out to a pace of about 17 minutes per mile).
From the race's start and finish lines at the Vanderburgh County 4-H grounds near Darmstadt, the race follows a clockwise loop through the hills and farmlands just to the west of the fairgrounds. The race's hilliest stretches are in the early going, particular between the starting line and the mile 2 marker, and the last couple miles of the race are (thankfully for the runners!) mostly downhill back into the finish line.
