Robotics Day Camp will introduce you to the fundamentals of robot building and programming using Lego Mindstorms NXT 2.0 kits. Campers will learn some history and current applications, but the goal is to build your own robot capable of performing a task such as maze following, hunt-and-destroy, fine the light, or security patrol. Mindstorms robots are programmable in an intuitive visual language, so no experience is necessary, although you should be motivated about the field of robotics. Campers with experience in Lego Robotics and the visual language included with those kits will be given the opportunity to explore more advanced topics. The camp will begin each morning at 9:00 a.m. with a brief meeting in Transylvania's Cowgill Center and campers will remain in this building most of the day. The camp fee includes lunch in the campus dining hall. During recreation time, campers will have access to the Internet in the computer labs. Parents will return to the Cowgill Center at 4:00 p.m. to pick up their children. To be eligible for this camp, you must have a grade average of at least a B and be recommended by two individuals - one of them a teacher or counselor who verifies your grades and confirms that you are interested in and could benefit from the camp's program. Letters of recommendation are due by May 9 as they are part of the selection process. Mail recommendation letters to: Academic Camp, Transylvania University, 300 North Broadway, Lexington, KY 40508. Enrollment is limited to 35 campers, so apply early. The application deadline is May 9 and confirmations will be sent by May 15. If you are not selected for camp, your camp fee will be refunded.
