Instructor: Lauren Riley Required Materials: a copy of each novel This class is for the upper elementary to middle school student who enjoys reading and discussing novels. Students should be motivated, independent readers or have support at home in reading around 100 pages per week (audio books are fine) from popular and classic juvenile fiction novels. Each week we will discuss our reading in a relaxed, book club format. We will explore narrative elements (character, setting, theme, plot, conflict, point of view), author’s purpose, and theme. We will cover much of what might be expected from a Middle School Literature class. For students who want a Middle School Literature class, for $100/session, I will assign and grade written assessments. Students will help choose our book selections each session, drawn from award winning and classic literature. We will read all new books this year, so last year’s students should feel free to join us again. Some of the books we may choose to read are The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan, Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key by Jack Gantos, The Bridge to Terebithia by Katherine Patterson, Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt, The Giver by Lois Lowry, Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card, Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli.
