General Race Info
The date for Jasper's second annual Heartland Half Marathon is set for Sunday, September 1, 2013 -- Labor Day Weekend -- and the race features a great course that starts in the shadow of the Jasper Train Depot along the Patoka River and finishes in the shade at Dave Buehler Plaza just a stone's throw away from the starting line.
Organizers say the course will be "very fast," and the elevation profile certainly bears that out with a starting line elevation of just over 450 feet above sea level. The course rarely rises much above that throughout the 13.1 miles of the half marathon, with the exception of a few hilly stretches just after the midway point of the race along St. Charles Street. After the runners pass through the middle section of the race, the course largely flattens out again on the way to the finish line.
Runners will start the race on the Third Avenue Bridge near the Jasper Train Depot and follow a mostly clockwise route through Jasper's downtown and around the outskirts of the city. While the first half of the race features a number of stretches through residential neighborhoods, the second half takes runners along St. Charles Street and later onto the paved pathway of the Jasper Riverwalk during the last mile and a half toward the finish line at the Dave Buehler Plaza.
The scheduled start time for the race is 7:30 AM ET to beat the heat that will likely arrive later in the day.
