Welcome to the latest issue of "The Promise", a newsletter from Susan G. Komen® Minnesota. Our purpose is to keep you informed on how your donations are used, the impact being made in the community, and how you can be involved in helping us fulfill the promise.

The Susan G. Komen Twin Cities Race for the Cure® will be once again at Southdale Center in 2016! Join us on Mother's Day, May 8, 2016, where thousands of people will gather at Southdale Center to raise funds, bring awareness, celebrate cancer survivorship and honor those who have lost their battle to the disease. The route will take participants on a 5K trek around beautiful Lake Cornelia in Edina. Same Mission. Same Race. ORIGINAL Place! Join the celebration on Mother's Day and help us as we strive to create a world without breast cancer! Register before March 17th to enjoy early bird rates and start your fundraising today.

Register today for the 17th Annual Susan G. Komen Brainerd Lakes Race for the Cure held on June 25, 2016. Participants may choose to run a 5K, walk a 5K or walk a 1 mile course with commemorative T-shirts given to all. The Race is held at Forestview Middle School in Baxter, Minnesota. Register today!

• Susan G. Komen Minnesota's service area covers all 87 counties of Minnesota.

• In 1980, the 5-year relative survival rate for women diagnosed with early stage breast cancer (cancer confined to the breast) was about 74 percent. Today, that number is 99 percent.

• Currently, there are more than 3.1 million breast cancers survivors, the largest group of cancer survivors in the U.S.

• In Minnesota, women may be eligible for free mammograms through the Minnesota Department of Health's Sage Screening Program. Call 1-888-643-2584 for more information. The partnership between Susan G. Komen Minnesota and the state of Minnesota is the LARGEST non-governmental screening resource for uninsured women in the state.

• Women treated with radiation therapy to the chest area for Hodgkin's disease at a young age have an increased risk of breast cancer. Although radiation therapy increases the risk of breast cancer later in life, its benefits for the treatment of Hodgkin's disease (or other cancers) far outweigh this risk.

• Komen Minnesota invested more than $1.5 million in their local communities last year for early detection and treatment of breast cancer, breast health education and outreach. Nationwide, Komen Affiliates invested a total of approx. $130 million in their local communities.

Komen Minnesota is a proud member of Community Health Charities. CHC represents 38 health-related nonprofits in our community and offer resources to local & national companies to assist with their community engagement, wellness and philanthropy initiatives.

There are three possible results to a BRCA 1/2 genetic test?

They are: no mutation, a mutation linked to cancer or a mutation not currently known to increase breast cancer risk. Even if you are found to have a BRCA 1/2 mutation it does not mean you will get breast cancer. Learn more.
