The recommended starting age for participants in this level is 6-years old. It is especially appropriate for participants who may have a fear of the water or those whose ability is unknown. The objectives of Level 1 are to learn basic personal water safety information and skills to help participants feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy the water safely. Support from the instructor and floatation devices are given to accomplish skills. At this level, participants start developing positive attitudes, good swimming habits and safe practices in and around water. Students will be introduced to safe water entry and exit, breath control and submerging, coordinated arm/leg action and buoyancy on the front and back, changing direction and position, and water safety. If bouyancy support isn't needed, then Level 2 is a better choice.
