WHY SEHGAHUNDA? WHY LETCHWORTH STATE PARK?
The Sehgahunda Valley (Vale of Three Falls), which encompasses the portion of the Genesee River Valley, was comprised of several villages settled by the Seneca People. The locations of these villages make up the current boundaries of Letchworth State Park.
Letchworth State Park spans over 14,000 acres, with miles and miles of trails - all with varying degrees of technicality to challenge both experienced runners and casual hikers. Many of the trails that make up this race are the very trails used by the Seneca Indians to access the Genesee River, which bisects this valley, giving rise to its nickname The Grand Canyon of the East.
We dare you to experience the beauty, history, and challenge of this unique event!
Parking is at the Parade Grounds, near the Packet Pick-Up point. Buses will transport runners from the registration point to the start at Mt. Morris Dam. There will be three buses leaving the Parade Grounds at 7:00 and 7:15 a.m.
This beautiful and challenging course follows a northern extension of the Finger Lakes Trail system along the eastern rim of the Letchworth gorge from Mt. Morris to Portageville. The trail is very runnable, well-marked and lovingly maintained, but by no means easy. Your meander through the wooded single-track along the rim will be punctuated by a seemingly interminable series of gullies, each entailing a rapid descent and a climb again to the rim. Many small stream crossings and ever-present roots will keep you on your toes. Pace yourself well. The course does not get easier as you near the finish. Prepare to test your endurance, prepare to have a blast, and prepare for an adventure!
