The Ka Iwi Coast Run & Walk is a community oriented 4 mile journey along the famous Ka Iwi coast scenic highway to be held on Sunday, Oct. 6th, 2013. The run will start with the rise of the sun over the Ka Iwi Channel at 6:30am as a special Hawaiian ‘oli (chant) composed for the event is performed.
The Ka Iwi Coast Run will start at Awawamalu (now known as Sandy Beach) and continues around the Ka Iwi coastline, passing Halona and onto Hanauma Bay and then finishing at the Hui Nalu Canoe Club halau on the shores of Maunalua Bay. We anticipate between 500 to over 1,000 registered participants in the following divisions; Adult, Children 12& under, Seniors 65+, Roy's Kula 100 ( Roy's Kula participants receive pre- race pupu's and refreshments at packet pick up and post race champagne brunch at Roy's in Hawaii Kai visit www.kaiwicoastrun.org to learn more about this limit exclusive offer)This amazing event will be the vehicle for a multitude of achievable goals; • To have participant involvement, as an individual or a family, nurture on-going personal responsibility for one’s health and the health, well-being and appreciation of one’s community and community resources. • To create awareness in our community of the Ka Iwi coast; mauka to makai. The involvement of non-profit community groups in East Oahu will be featured as part of this fund-raising and educational-raising event.• To have participants Learn, Share and Care about the exceptional cultural repository of the Ka Iwi coast by website access to cultural information as well as a cultural info sheet in their race registration packet. The race will feature key cultural points as part of the course and educational and informational booths showcasing business and nonprofit organizations within the Hawaii Kai and nearby communities (Aina Haina, Kuliouou, Hahaione & Waimanalo). The hope is to foster a sense of stewardship of the coastline.• This event supports the sport of Hawaiian canoe paddling and promotes the family-oriented Hui Nalu Canoe Club, whose home waters embrace the Ka Iwi coast. Hui Nalu has over 500 members from all parts of Oahu. The funds raised will be used for equipment needs for the club.
