AnchorEVENT FORMAT

Pro/Am

2017 marks the first year for the new Pro/Am race format: a self-categorized, mass-start race limited to 250 registrantsRiders will be lined up / seeded fast to slow at the start and will be awarded overall medals and medals based on their finish in their respective categories.

Why a mass-start Pro/Am?

After 12 editions of an individual category Pro/Am, the expenses and resources needed for an event of this complexity have overtaken the resources available going forward; from volunteers, police, officials, pace & follow cars and drivers, insurance, etc., the individual category race format is proving unsustainable for our event and many others like it.

For 2017 and beyond, we are taking new inspiration from other popular mass-start events, like the Leadviille 100, competitive gran fondos, and many other similar events which provide a competitive experience without an overly complex and sometimes confusing format. If you have raced the Pro/Am in the past, we hope you'll consider this new format that allows racers to test themselves against riders from other age groups and experiences in a controlled and participation-limited way. It's the best we can do and we hope you enjoy it.

Open Gran Fondo

The Open is a mass-start gran fondo with awards based on finish order in various age groups and categories.

AnchorFREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. Is this a tough race?  Yes. You should start training today.  Please consider competing in one of the many great events in the Northeast ahead of the race as well.

Battenkill should not be your first race of the year.

2. Where does my entry fee go?  Operational costs for road events like the Tour of the Battenkill have skyrocketed in recent years.  Police, professional staff, insurance, officials, and venues are all significant and increasing costs to any road cycling event.  All together, there are more than 500 people that are directly involved in the Battenkill weekend that are compensated in some way and their time is as valuable as yours!  We are also very proud to donate more than $15,000 each year to the many volunteer groups that engage the event and help to ensure rider safety along the course.

It's a lot of work. If you think it's not worth the entry fee, then you probably shouldn't come. You'll regret it, though...

3. What is Great American Cycling?  Great American Cycling/Anthem Sports is the organization that produces the Tour of the Battenkill, Tour of the Catskills, and many other epic cycling events across the Northeast, with a participation base of more than 50,000 riders and racers since 2004.

4. Should I enter the Pro/Am or the Open gran fondo?  If you want a competitive experience and challenge at the Tour of the Battenkill, then you should consider racing in the Pro/Am.  You will be combined with racers from elite to beginner.  If you would rather be challenged by the course and and terrain and if your goal is to finish the event, then the Open gran fondo is for you!

All participants are expected to carry individual medical coverage.

5. Is the Pro/Am it still a race?  Yes, though it is now a mass start, limited to 250 registrants.

6Is the Pro/Am a 'sanctioned' race?  No.

7. Are there any rules?  Of course.  Race officials will enforce virtually all the traditional rules that are standard and expected within the sport.

8. So, it's pretty much the same as it always was?  Yeah, pretty much. It's a bike race. Enjoy. If you want to be a "Pro for a day", however, this is the wrong event for you. This is an amateur event organized for your enjoyment only.
