MMRF PowerTeam: 2012 Boston Marathon
Join the MMRF PowerTeam at the 2012 Boston Marathon. The Boston Marathon is the world's oldest and most prestigious marathon, and indeed for many runners "the one" they have to run in their lifetime. Boston is the only marathon (besides the US Olympic Trials) that runners have to qualify for (by running a certain fast qualifying time at another marathon) making a place on the starting line very special indeed.
The 26.2 miles, from the narrow neighborhood streets of Hopkinton to the skyscrapers of downtown Boston, are flanked with thousands of fans, who make witnessing the marathon an annual party on this Massachusetts holiday, Patriots Day.
The MMRF is accepting registrations, pending receipt of a very limited number of entries for Boston this year. Runners who demonstrate an interest in meeting or exceeding the fundraising commitment and those who are either connected to a myeloma patient or who work in the medical or research field related to myeloma will receive priority. Early registrations will also be noted.
The MMRF will be with you every step of the way, from the moment you sign up, to the incredible moment you cross the finish line in downtown Boston. Running on our team promises to be one of the most empowering and inspiring experiences of your life.
MMRF athletes who join the Boston team must pledge to raise a minimum of $4000 for the MMRF. The MMRF will pick up the charge for your Boston Marathon registration fee, so there is not additional fee to sign up for the marathon. Team members receive free virtual training and other training support to get you ready for race day. Free fundraising tools, including a personalized online fundraising page, downloadable marketing materials, and full-time fundraising support are provided to help you reach your fundraising goals. Team newsletters, which provide important team news, training and fundraising tips and lots of inspiration, help our runners get to the starting line meeting all of their goals, fundraising, training and personal. Team members also receive race day team jerseys, marathon "support team" t-shirts, and other runner amenities.
In order to ensure that 90% of all funds raised go back to fund myeloma research, each MMRF athlete will be responsible for costs such as transportation and hotel accommodations.
About the MMRF and Multiple Myeloma
The mission of the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) is to relentlessly pursue innovative means that accelerate the development of next-generation multiple myeloma treatments to extend the lives of patients and lead to a cure. The MMRF is the world's largest private funder of myeloma research. An outstanding 90% of all funds raised go toward research and related programming. Multiple myeloma is an incurable blood cancer. Although progress has been made in treating multiple myeloma, the five-year survival rate remains one of the lowest of all cancers.
Why Run for our Team?
Our teams raise money and awareness for cancer research. Many members of our teams have a direct connection to multiple myeloma. Others join us to support a great organization that is transforming the way that medical research and drug development are being conducted. All team members are proud to support an organization that is using their money responsibly and is one of the nations' highest rated charities by 'watch dogs' like Charity Navigator, which rates the MMRF in the top 1% of all charities it monitors.
