This day is designed to be a friendly competition, emphasizing the benefits of exercise to all women and the importance of helping those who need assistance. The Goals for Hope Women's Soccer Tournament is not about winning or losing, but about participating and recognizing that we can be proactive about our health, while supporting our community.
What is Goals For Hope?
Several long-time friends, who have played soccer together in the Hudson Valley for more then two decades, wanted to do something special for their community.
Judy Rose was the first to decide to reach out, and got her women’s team involved in several soccer events and fundraising tournaments. After witnessing the success of others, she quickly convinced Rose Greene and Mary Darcy Schanz that they could undertake something equally as exciting. They just needed a meaningful purpose.
It all began to come together in June 2003, when Mary was speaking to Cathy Varunok (co-founder of Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation) about their ideas for soccer tournament. Mary had recently lost a close family friend, Rhoda Post, to a long battle with breast cancer. Cathy knew Rhoda, and was affected by her death as well. The idea struck them almost simultaneously. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if this women’s soccer team hosted their own tournament, for the benefit of Cathy’s newly formed foundation? (www.milesofhopebcf.org)
The idea quickly caught on. In no time, Judy, Mary and Rose were joined by Nikole Seipp, Mary Jo Levins, Maureen Darcy, Trish Darcy Silverman, Cathy Varunok and Miles of Hope to form the backbone of Goals for Hope.
Goals For Hope MissionThe Goals for Hope mission is to raise funds for the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation. Since its inception in 2003, the foundation has raised over $900,000 for support programs and services for people in the Hudson Valley battling breast cancer. A few of the programs they have supported include: scholarships for college-bound children whose lives have been affected by breast cancer; a chamber music concert program and a boutique at the Dyson Center for Cancer Care at Vassar Brothers Medical Center; a medical gap care program that provides funding for life emergencies for under-insured individuals in the Hudson Valley who are battling breast cancer.
All players must be 18 years or older by August 1, 2009 - Sorry, there will be no exceptions!
Definition Of Divisions: Form a team and play in our Goals for Hope soccer tournament. If you want to play but cannot form or find a team to join, email goalsforhope@aol.com and indicate which division is right for you.
Please read all of the definitions and then decide which one will be the best for you!
We recognize that there are teams of differing abilities playing in the same division. We will attempt to schedule teams of similar talent against each other. Our plan is to organize the teams into smaller subdivisions, which will mean we may ask your team contact (via email) for added information about your team.
Soccer Mom Bracket: In both divisions, games will be 5 v 5 (4 plus a goalkeeper), and the maximum roster size for a team is 10 players.
Recreational Soccer Moms – "Those who want to play." This is for soccer moms who want to take a turn on the field with small-sided games. This division is simply for fun!
Competitive Super Soccer Moms - "Those who want to win." This is for the soccer moms who are inexperienced players, but who none-the-less possess the drive to win. In an attempt to keep things fair, experienced players should not be in this division.
Open Bracket: In both divisions, games will be 7 v 7 (6 plus a keeper), and the maximum roster size for a team is 14 players.
Recreational 7 v 7 – In an attempt to keep things fair, if the majority of your team is comprised of beginner and intermediate players, this is your division.
Competitive 7 v 7 - If you are a die-hard soccer player, you need to play here. This division is for players who are still active in the sport at a competitive league level.
The early registration deadline is Tuesday, June 23, 2009. If you experience a problem with the online registration, please contact Mary Schanz directly at goalsforhope@aol.com or (845) 592-1311.
Registration forms and waivers will be posted when they become available.
All players should have a notarized waiver with them on the morning of August 1. The waiver can be printed out during the team registration process. There will be a notary at the field, just in case! However, we urge everyone to do this beforehand to save time and avoid confusion on the tournament day.
Team captains must register their team including full names, email addresses, and mailing addresses.
We strongly encourage you to register online using this secure site. However, you may register by mail by clicking here.
