What's Included

This class is ONE NIGHT only, Wednesday, July 20. Marbling is an ancient technique used to embellish paper and fabric with swirls of color. Colors are floated and manipulated on an aqueous surface and transferred to a paper or fabric surface, creating a unique pattern reminiscent of the natural look of marble, stones and liquid smoke. Leave class with at least 5 sheets of marbled paper and 2 fabric samples (silk and cotton). Students will learn: - chemistry and how to coat papers and surface with an alum mordant - how to make a Carrageenan size - how mix and test a variety of paints with gall - to make a splatter brush and other marbling tools from household items - how to manipulate the floating paints to create magical patterns of color - students leave with a marbling kit to continue creating at home Oil and Cotton is a creative exchange in Oak Cliff, Texas. Known for its innovative programming and "make do with what you got" philosophy, Oil and Cotton will inhabit Trinity Valley School for one week this summer, offering a sampling of its classes for adults, toddlers, and schoolkids. Hands-on classes are taught by professionals with knowledge of traditional and contemporary practice. Students are encouraged to be unique in their process while completing works to be displayed and celebrated.
