What's Included

Surrealism is a movement that started in France in the 1920s. Surrealist art grew out of Dada and evolved into a series of contemporary movements, most importantly the Situationists International. The surrealists revolutionized the processes of art as they sought to overturn the conventions of Western art that had only led to destructive atrocities such as the First World War. They were seeking truth of being and in art. To do so, influenced by the psychology of Sigmund Freud and Carl Gustav Jung, they invented a number of devices that would allow the unconscious free rein. Decalcomania, cubomania, frottage, coulage, and grattage are just a few of the techniques used by the surrealists. In this lesson in art history the antecedents of surrealism, the political climate, and the influence surrealism still has on contemporary art will be discussed. Supply List: none
