Regardless of your intentions, the practice is designed to increase focus, concentration and a meditative state. Therefore, you're likely to leave class feeling refreshed. Here are four key poses to help you prepare for your first practice.

Ujjayi Breathing: "Ocean Sounding Breath" or "Victorious Breath"

Ujjayi Breathing pose

Ujjayi breathing is a traditional technique used during many yoga practices. It can be practiced while moving or being still.

Inhale slowly through the nose, feel the breath move through the back of the throat and fill up the lungs. Exhale fully through the nose, moving the breath from the lungs, up the back of throat and back out through the nose.

Allow the breath to be relaxed as you constrict the back of the throat, while breathing to create a gentle "ah" or hissing sound. Lengthen the inhale and exhale out as long as possible and allow the sound to be consistent and smooth.

Benefits

  • Focuses the mind, calms the body, and generates internal heat.
  • Increases endurance, soothes the nerves and promotes mindfulness.
