Active City Spotlight: New York City

When block after block after block is nothing but high-rise buildings, paved streets, subway tunnels, parking meters and too many people, it makes sense that the residents of New York City needed a place to escape.

That was the motivation behind the creation of Central Park more than 150 years ago. And the city planners nailed it.

Today, Central Park is a paradise for active New Yorkers. The 6-mile Park Drive loop is chock full of runners and cyclists from sunrise to sunset, and many running races are held there throughout the year. In addition, New Yorkers flock to Central Park for rock climbing, kayaking, baseball, softball and more.

The overwhelming popularity of the park is proof that New Yorkers aren't content staying in their cramped apartments all day and night. So what all do they do, and where do they do it?

Here is a guide to getting active in the Big Apple, whether it's running, cycling, swimming or hiking in one of the city's five boroughs—and beyond.
