10 Best Ab Exercises

Written by

Abs seem to be one of the toughest areas to improve on. You do need to work from the inside out, that is, building inner core strength with resistance before you can actually see results. Try these 10 exercises for a killer core workout and ab-shredding routine:

1.) CABLE WOODCHOP

This can be done with an upward, downward, or lateral movement. This works your obliques, but also involves more full-body movement.

2.) SIDE CRUNCHES

It's best done with a stability ball and is great for the upper and lower obliques. Obliques are extremely important when training the abs.

3.) EXERCISE BALL WEIGHTED CRUNCHES

If you're a beginner, try it without weights. If you use weights, make sure it is comfortable to be held behind your head, or on your chest for an easier exercise.

4.) BICYCLE CRUNCHES

This is done quickly and without equipment. Try doing two or three  sets of 20 to 25 per side. Beginners, try two sets of 10 per side (lifting each elbow and knee once counts as one rep).

5.) REVERSE CRUNCHES

If you're at an intermediate to advanced fitness level, place a medicine ball between your knees. You can also do this off the end of a bench, or whatever causes you to actually feel the tension in your lower abs.

6.) LEG RAISES

This exercise is a little tougher, but one of the best for the stubborn lower ab region. You can do this off the edge of a bench while sitting.

7.) STABILITY BALL ROLL OUTS

This takes arm strength and balance as well as your core; a fairly intense exercise, but very effective and simple.

8.) SWISS BALL PIKES

Somewhat difficult, this requires balance, but also extremely effective.

9.) FORWARD LUNGES

Incorporate this with other exercises to get a killer ab workout. Lunges require no equipment, but you can up the ante and hold dumbbells down by your sides. Not only is this core strengthening exercise, but it also works your glutes, hips, and thighs.

10.) SWIMMING

This form of cardio targets the abs, as long as you kick outwardly. Plus, swimming is a low-impact workout on your body--so you'll get a nice full-body workout too.

Add these 10 exercises to your workout routine to get killer abs. Remember, exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet to reach your ultimate goal.
