What's Included

Learn to create a variety of dynamic textures to incorporate into your jewelry design. Workshop attendees will explore the never-ending possibilities of surface embellishments. Create your own one-of-a kind texture plates to be used over and over with mixed metals. We will explore organic and contemporary textures using hammers, hand tools, rolling mill impressions, and flex shaft accessories. Heat-generated textures such as reticulation and methods of fusing will also be covered. Students will make a collection of textured metal sheets to be used in the design and creation of jewelry. Soldering tips and techniques will be reviewed as we begin fabricating. Wendy Thurlow is an award-winning studio jeweler, whose work has been praised for its individuality. She earned a BFA in metalsmithing from the University of Arts in Philadelphia. She has been producing one-of-a-kind and limited-edition jewelry for over 18 years. Her work is contemporary and rich with texture. It incorporates centuries-old techniques with mixed metals, surface embellishments, semi-precious and precious stones to produce jewelry that is both organic and sculptural. Her work can be found in private collections nationally and internationally as well as in galleries throughout the country. Wendy’s jewelry has been seen in many publications including: Distinctive Style, Art Jewelry, and Bella Amorie Jewelry. The artist currently lives in Bradenton, Florida where she is a full-time entrepreneur of her jewelry company, Hammered by Wendy. She has been teaching the art of metalsmithing for over 10 years at locations such as Longboat Key Center for the Arts, Art Center Manatee and the Morean Art Center on the west coast of Florida.

About This Organizer

Touchstone is located in Farmington, Pennsylvania, amid the natural splendor of the Laurel Highlands. Founded in 1972 as the Pioneer Crafts Council, Touchstone's original mission was to foster interest in the preservation of the traditional craft forms and culture of the Appalachian region. Today, the craft school has expanded to include a wide variety of traditional and emerging craft forms, including blacksmithing, ceramics, metal, jewelry, textiles, glass, painting, mosaics, and printmaking. In addition to offering seasonal craft courses taught by nationally renowned artisans, Touchstone provides underserved audiences in the region, from senior citizens to public school students, with craft-centered educational programming. Touchstone's artistic, educational, and residential facilities sit on 150 acres of lush woodlands and pristine wilderness. The campus is covered with towering trees, unique rock formations, and wildflower meadows, and is crossed by McIntyre Run, a rushing stream.

Not only is Touchstone Center for Crafts the only residential craft school in Pennsylvania, it's the natural setting for your creative nature.

Touchstone's mission is to advance excellence in the arts and crafts by educating and encouraging individuals to develop technical skills, good design, and innovative expression. To realize this mission, the school offers workshops, exhibitions, lectures, demonstrations, and other forms of artistic and educational programming throughout the year. Dedicated to achieving national prominence and local relevance, Touchstone strives for national distinction by recruiting some of the best artists in the country to teach high-quality craft workshops that attract a geographically diverse audience.
