The Ephraim Yacht Club, located in Door County, WI, offers sailing lessons to junior, teen and adult EYC members. The EYC's sailing school is one of the oldest and largest sailing schools in the Midwest. Lessons are taught by US Sailing-trained and -certified staff in a fleet of 38 sailboats, including Flying Scots, Flying Juniors, Lasers and Optimists, and involve on-shore and on-the-water instruction, covering safety, seamanship, sailing theory, boat handling and boat care. EYC membership is open to all.
Junior Group Lessons
Group Lessons for juniors and teens are taught in 6 separate Sessions over the course of the summer:
- Session A: June 11 - June 15 (1 week only)
- Session B: June 18 - June 29
- Session C: July 2 - July 13
- Session D: July 16 - July 27
- Session E: July 30 - August 10
- Session F: August 13 - August 17
- Morning lessons are from 9:00 AM to noon
- Afternoon lessons are from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM
- Sailing Camp meets Monday through Thursday
- Levels 1 - 4 and Advanced Racing meet Monday through Friday
- Weekly Afternoon Sessions, June 11 through August 17, meet afternoons Monday-Friday 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM
- Thursday Evening 4 week Session, from June 28 through July 19, meets Thursday evenings 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM
- Thursday Evening 4 week Session, from July 26 through August 16, meets
Thursday evenings 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM
- Thursday Evening 8 week Session, from June 28 through August 16, meets Thursday evenings 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM
An introductory course for any child who has completed 1st grade but who has not yet completed 3rd grade. Students will learn the basics of sailing and safety on the water. This is a preparatory course for the remainder of the junior program, but is not a required prerequisite course.
Level 1 Sailing
An introductory course for students who have completed 2nd grade but who are not yet 13 years old. Students will learn sailing vocabulary, parts of the boat, parts of the sail, basic rigging, safety, finding the wind, some right of way rules, some sailing knots and more. Sailing Camp is not a prerequisite for Level 1 Sailing. A separate Level 1 Sailing class is offered in Sessions B through E in the afternoons for teens age 13 and older.
Level 2 Sailing
For students who have completed 2nd grade and Level 1 Sailing and who are not yet 13 years old*. Students will expand their basic knowledge of sailing, tacking, jibing, three basic points of sail, safety, boat handling, additional sailing knots and more. A separate Level 2 Sailing class is offered in sessions B through E in the afternoons for teens age 13 and older.
Level 3 Sailing
For students that have completed Level 2 Sailing*. Students will learn advanced rigging, reading the water, six points of sail, controlled jibe, sail trim, capsizing and person overboard techniques, docking, right-of-way rules, basic weather, additional knots and more.
Level 4 Sailing
For students who have completed Level 3 Sailing*. Students will learn the physics of sailing, use of cunningham and boom vang, snap jibing, anchoring, coiling and throwing lines, advanced boat handling, race course setting, sailing a race course, use of a spinnaker and more. Passing the EYC skipper?s test to graduate from Level 4 entitles a student member to skipper a club-owned sailboat outside of supervised lessons and races.
An advanced racing course for any student who has completed Level 4 and has passed their EYC Skipper's Test*. Students will learn advanced racing tactics and rules, upwind and downwind tactics, mark rounding, racing rules, starting strategies, race course strategies, team racing tactics and much more. Students with a serious interest in racing should take this course.
Adult Afternoon Group Sailing
Offered in the afternoon (1:30 PM to 4:30 PM) 5 days a week in 1 week sessions for adults 18 years or older. Students will learn the basics of sailing in a fun, social and comfortable environment. Emphasis is placed on safety and boat handling. The goal is for students to independently, comfortably and safely skipper a sailboat.
Adult Evening Group Sailing
Offered Thursday evenings (5:00 PM to 8:00 PM) for either eight weeks or four weeks, for adults 18 years or older. Students will learn the basics of sailing in a fun, social and comfortable environment. Emphasis is placed on safety and boat handling. The goal is for students to independently, comfortably and safely skipper a sailboat.
Offered by appointment. The instructor will assess and train the student(s) on sailing techniques needed. This is a great way to get a lot of instruction in a short period of time. Private lessons can be taken as an individual or small group.
