This is a new race in the Triangle area be put on by Durham InStep for Life The legendary Zola Budd, better known as Barefoot Budd, will be participating in the 5/K 10/K run. Zola still holds the 2,000 meter, 3,000 meter, 3K and one mile Junior World Records. She also competed in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. Zola continues to run for pleasure and competitively. One of her latest accomplishments was running in the 79K Comrades Race in South Africa.
The event will be run on the Al Buehler Trail on the campus of Duke University. The start/finish area is near the intersection of Cameron Boulevard and 751. Runners can park in the lot at the corner of Cameron Boulevard and Science Drive.
The 10k begins at 9:30 am while the 5K Run and the 5K Family Walk start at 9:40 am.
The entry fees for the 5K Run or 10K Run are $20, increasing to $25 after February 24. For the 5K Family Walk, the fees are $10 and $15, respectively. The first 100 entrants will receive a water bottle.
Awards will be given to the first three male finishers and to the first three female finishers in both the 5K and the 10K.
Durham InStep for Life was created to assist churches, schools and health care organizations in tackling the challenge of childhood obesity. Every church, school, university and health care organization in Durham is encouraged to form an InStep for Life team to coordinate activities that inspire healthy eating and physical activity and further awareness of childhood obesity in their community. Zola, who now runs in Newton Shoes, will be giving away two pair of Newton Shoes as door prizes. These shoes are well-known for their “highly responsive and engaging cushioning” which can energize the runner.
