What's Included

This short course not only teaches students some of the most powerful and useful molecular biology techniques used in modern research, but will also stress the importance of these tools in the study of life processes. Through a series of integrated laboratory exercises, students will visualize, with the naked eye, the power of cloning a series of genes from one organism into another, unrelated organism. In this program, students will use a bioluminescent genetic system (the lux operon) from Vibrio fischeri, an aquatic bacterium, to demonstrate the eloquent and modern molecular biology techniques involved in cloning, including DNA extraction, restriction digestion, gel electrophoresis, bacterial transformation and PCR. see http://www.ncssm.edu/accelerator/attacking-cloning-strategy for more details and requirements
