Racing to Save Lives

Welcome to my Team In Training home page.

It's all over! As soon as I get the links, I'll post the finish line picture.

I started this journey by setting some goals. Two of them were to visit all 50 states and to complete a marathon. When I heard about the Mayor's Midnight Run in Anchorage, Alaska, I thought "what better way to achieve them both?" With Team in Training, I'm also doing it for a great cause.

All of us on Team In Training are raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. I'm completing this marathon in honor of all individuals who are battling blood cancers, survivors and those who have lost the battle. Along the way, I've learned that these diseases are closer to home that I would have imagined. My boss's mother-in-law died of leukemia. Just a few weeks ago, my neighbor died of Burkitt's Lymphoma, leaving behind a wife and two small children. A coworker's four-year old son is currently being treated for ALL - a cancer that has become more curable. Another coworker's mother is a cancer survivor.

These people and their families are the real heroes on our team, and we need your support to cross the ultimate finish line - a cure!

Please make a donation to support my participation in Team In Training and help advance the Society's mission. Thanks to my friends and family I've nearly met my fundraising goal with over two months to go. I'm working hard to really give TNT and the LLS all I can.

May 10th Update: I've now walked two 18 milers in under 4:10 with a 22 mile walk this weekend. If I can keep my hydration levels up, 6 hours is for the marathon looks like acheivable. We'll see how my calves hold up on the last half mile (uphill!) in Anchorage.

I also took a 4 day side trip to states number 48 and 49 (North Dakota and New Mexico). Just Alaska left now!

June 4th Update:
Just two more weeks until Anchorage. Our team is the last to race this season, so we held some emotional send offs the Avenue of Giants and Rock n' Roll San Diego teams already. Going through 4 months of this with people really builds a bond.

We're winding down with "short" 3, 2, and 1 hour walks leading up to the 18th. The next update will be when we get back!

June 19th update:
I did it!. It was a rainy, muddy track with a cold breeze, but nothing could keep us from finishing strong. My first marathon ended 6 hours and 20 minutes after the gun. Not only was there dancing that night at the victory party, I was dancing right across the finish line.

Thanks again for all your support and making this trip possible. The memories will last a lifetime! - Ron
