Help Find Christian A Cure!
13.1 Miles With A Purpose
Dear family and friends,

Fall 2012 was when a new journey began for the Meyer family. Our son, Christian, then 21 months old had been born with what seemed like every food allergy under the sun and until this point the doctors had assumed his digestion (diapers) were a sign of food intolerances. Over the next couple of months, Christian became increasingly crankier, quite lethargic, would wake up screaming several times a night, and what had started as 5-6 loose stools a day had become 10-12 diapers of diarrhea per day.

We had seen a GI specialist by now but were in a waiting game to be cleared for a colonoscopy/endoscopy to get answers. Then, the week of Christmas, it all spiraled out of control. Christian stopped eating, was barely sleeping, and the diapers had now turned to pure blood causing him to scream out in pain in a way no parent ever wants to hear. He was showing every sign he was suffering from anemia and Brendan and I were at the end of our rope.

So the day after Christmas we headed out to CHOP ER in the hopes they would admit him. They did admit him and I have never felt more relieved in my life. We spent the next 8 days at CHOP and finally got our diagnosis. It was Crohn's disease. A lifelong auto immune disease that can affect the entire digestive tract.

Although relieved to finally have an answer, we were devastated by the thoughts of what lay ahead for Christian. People with this disease often times spend months at a time in the hospital dealing with fistulas, bowel resections and ostomies to name just a few of ways IBD's can cause suffering.

Fast forward 7 months and Christian is progressing well with the help and guidance of our wonderful team at CHOP. A new found sense of resiliency and purpose has taken shape in our lives. Therefore, I've decided to take some action.

I have recently taken on a new challenge with one of the best people in the whole world, and a great friend, Danyelle Celano. We plan to complete the Las Vegas Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon on November 17, 2013. We are running this 13.1 mile race to raise $7,500 each for the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA). Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are known together as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). It is estimated that 1.4 million Americans have IBD, however many more suffer in silence. It most often affects people between the ages of 15 and 40.

I hope my effort makes a difference in fighting a disease that affects so many. Please consider supporting me in this half marathon. Whatever donation you can make is greatly appreciated. You may write a check payable to CCFA (mail to me), pay by cash or you can make a secure online credit card donation to my web page.

Thanks so much for your support! Go Team New Jersey!

These dollars will help make new treatments possible and fuel the search for cures.

About Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis
Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are both major categories of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD). IBD affects an estimated 1.4 million Americans. These chronic diseases tend to run in families and they affect males and females equally. Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract and may affect any part from the mouth to the anus. Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory condition limited to the colon, otherwise known as the large intestine.

About CCFA
Since our founding over four decades ago, CCFA has remained at the forefront of research in Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Today, we fund cutting-edge studies at major medical institutions, nurture investigators at the early stages of their careers, and finance underdeveloped areas of research. In addition, our educational workshops and programs, along with our scientific journal, Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, enable medical professionals to keep pace with this rapidly growing field.
