Despite being richly blessed in natural resources, more than half of the Philippines’ 84 million people live on less than $2 a day. Corruption and poverty stalk the land, victimizing millions and depressing a whole nation to the point of groveling in shame and fear at its hunger, homelessness, criminality. In addition, the December 2004 typhoons devastation, which left 40,000 families homeless, has greatened the cry for help. Clearly, something must be done. Filipino or not, the cry of poverty surpasses any color boundaries. In essence, it is about caring for mankind, and uplifting humanity as a whole to experience a life that is truly worth living.
Gawad Kalinga, which means “to offer care” is a holistic community-building movement with programs in shelter, education, livelihood, health, and community empowerment. In October 2003, it launched GK777, a mission to build 700,000 homes in 7,000 communities in 7 years.
GK Hero’s Run is a six month marathon training program to help achieve this mission . This is an endurance building training program that includes a run/walk ratio. The program’s goal is to guide and encourage all participants in finishing a 26.2 mile marathon. Participants do not have to be an experienced runner to participate.
