Young Leaders for Change 2007

Performance Leads The Way To Development

As a first-time Director of this year’s Campaign, I want to personally thank you for joining me. I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself.

Having spent the last 16 years of my life as part of the All Stars and being one of the 1st 12 to be honored as a young leader in 2000, this campaign means a lot to me. As we know opportunities that lead to personal growth and development and even life success are scarce for young people in the poor communities of NYC. Most young people spend their days trying to survive the circumstances of poverty.

I was fortunate to have the programs of the All Stars to give me choices and opportunities that helped me build a successful life for me and my family. And the same goes for our Young Leaders for Change. Let me introduce you to this years honorees. (Pictured left to right.)

Nikki Simmons, a 28 year old young woman from Brownsville, Brooklyn, who has been a manager with the All Stars since 2004. She has managed over 8 groups, her largest being the dance group Next Tyme Warning.

Snigdha Rani Sarkar, better known as Sita, was born in Bangladesh, raised in the Lower East Side and now resides in Elmhurst, Queens. She joined the All Stars Project in 2005 and has completed 2 semesters of Youth Onstage! (YO!) and many semesters of Youth Onstage's advanced classes. Sita has been in numerous plays including Our City and Over There/Over Here and is a member of the YO! directing team and the production team for Castillo Theatre. She has also hosted at an All Stars Gala, presented at the Otto Award Ceremony, taken part in numerous fundraising activities and regularly participates in All Stars phone shifts. She feels that her experience with the All Stars has made her more outspoken, more cosmopolitan, and more concerned about her community. Of being awarded this honor, Sita says, “It's a great honor to be given this award. I feel like I am a young leader for change and All Stars helped me to become that person. That title is a title that I can walk with the rest of my life and still find relevant. It becomes more than just an award for this reason. I couldn't be more grateful to receive this award.”

William Santos is 24 years old and currently lives in Jamaica, Queens. He was a participant in the Fall 2000 Development School for Youth and has been a long time volunteer at ASTSN Talent Show events, as well as a host at an All Stars Gala. William performed at the All Stars in the 2007 Hip Hop Cabaret and at the 2007 Performing the World Conference in the workshop, “All Stars Coming Out”. This fall, William will attend the 2007 Youth Onstage class. William says, “[The All Stars] has and dared me to dream the biggest dream for myself, and given me many tools to build it.”

Hanner Leal is 18 years old, and currently lives in South Ozone Park, Queens. He has been involved with the All Stars for the past four years, first a member of the Fall semester of the Development School for Youth, and later as a member of the talent show tech crew, and a youth host at All Stars Galas. Before he met the All Stars, he described himself as being timid and shy, yet through his work in DSY, as well as his outreach for the All Stars, he became more outgoing, ultimately becoming a spokesman for the DSY, and bringing more young people into our programs. Hanner feels that his involvement with the All Stars has given him a stronger sense of who he is, and what he is capable of doing in his community.

Bryan Scurry is 19 years old and lives in Brooklyn, NY. He is a graduate of the Fall 2005 Development School for Youth class and is an active volunteer with many of the All Stars youth programs and a current member of the Phyllis Hyman Phat Friend Awards Youth Selection Committee. He has performed at the All Stars in the play reading of “What is to be Dead” and in the play, “Homeland Security”, choreographed by Desmond Richardson. He also performed with the All Stars at the 2007 Performing the World Conference. Bryan is currently a student at Kingsborough Community College.

Nekai Johnson is 21 years old and currently lives in the Gun Hill Road neighborhood of the Bronx, NY. She is a graduate of the Fall 2002 Development School for Youth class and is an active volunteer with the All Stars youth programs. She has performed at the All Stars in the play readings of Macbeth and What is to be Dead. She has also been a host at the All Stars Gala and participated in Back to School events. Nekai feels that her experiences with the All Stars have made her worldlier, helping her to develop into a leader and role model for others.

In the spirit of giving and reaching more young people - I want to make our Young Leaders for Change Holiday campaign very big this year.

You are joining hundreds of supporters, volunteers and staff whose collective goal is to send out 5,000 emails/letters to our family, friends and colleagues requesting that they too prioritize youth development and sponsor a young person or two to get involved in the All Stars.
