| Walk for Recovery |
|
| More than 3,000 people participated in last years Walk for Recovery in support of behavioral health programs providing mental health and substance abuse prevention, education, treatment and recovery services.
No one is untouched by the effects of alcohol, drug abuse or mental illness. Many of us have felt first hand the devastating impact of these problems in our own families, within our circle of friends, our neighborhoods, or in our workplace and community. Consider these statistics:
- Roughly 50% of individuals with serious mental disorders are also affected by substance abuse.
- 14.5 million Americans aged 12 or older are classified with dependence on or abuse of either alcohol or illicit drugs.
- Mental disorders are the leading cause of disability in North America and Europe.
- Alcohol related accidents are the leading cause of death among young people ages 12-14.
- Drug abusers have 300% higher medical costs which increases everyone's insurance premiums.
- The economic cost of untreated mental illness in the United States is 100 billion dollars annually.
- Leaders on issues of substance abuse and mental health, including the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) highlight the need for treating co-occurring substance abuse and psychiatric disorders.
