Meet Galang Nguyen (second from left). Fours years ago, her family moved from Northern California and Galang started high school without knowing anyone. She described herself as introverted and shy. Until she became involved with Volunteer San Diego’s SAVY program (Students Actively Volunteering for You). Galang discovered hidden talents within while contributing 225 hours of service to the community.
“I was put into unique situations and given responsibilities that normal teenagers usually don’t have. Given such tasks, I was able to break out of my shell and find my niche. I learned how to be assertive, to speak my mind, and to become a leader.”
SAVY served as her jumpstart in civic engagement. Galang has since gone on to attend youth conferences around the country learning about everything from politics to media literacy.
