| Welcome to my fundraising page for Voluntarios de la Esperanza! My name is Marion Gee and those that know me are acutely aware of my love affair with reading. History books, sci-fi, fantasy, mystery, travelogues, memoirs...books of all kinds, shapes and sizes. I was very excited, then, to learn about VE's new program, ¡Vamos a Leer!, a reward system program that offers children the incentive and external motivation that kids so often need to start reading on their own. Children will be placed into Color group according to their level of literacy. For each color group there is an assigned number of books in order to win two different prizes: either an ice cream sundae or a free movie ticket to the latest attraction. At the end of the two months, all the children that have read a Summary sheet for each book will be rewarded with one of the prizes. Soon I will be leaving for Chile where I will have the opportunity to share my own love of reading through VE's great program. Unfortunately the kids have access to only a limited number of books, mostly old textbooks or other books that are outdated or falling apart. This sad state of affairs makes the program ¡Vamos a Leer! that much harder to implement. And that is where you can make a difference. You can help these kids improve their reading skills and expand their imaginations by donating money for our book drive. Whether you donate the amount for one copy of "Harry Potter y la piedra filosofal" or an entire library, you too can help these kids discover the fun in reading. |
