There are more than 150,000 people in Massachusetts affected by severe vision loss. They are your friends and neighbors, employees and students, children, parents and grandparents.
They are capable and accomplished people, but who are faced with challenges every day to accomplish the daily activities that most of us take for granted, such as reading a book or newspaper, shopping, traveling, maintaining our homes, and using common media such as the internet.
Unfortunately, blind and visually impaired people often do not have access to many of the services and technologies that can help them to be as independent as possible. For instance, studies show that 70% of blind adults in Massachusetts are unemployed, and 82% of our adult residents who are blind do not use a computer! Also, only one in five school children that can use Braille are being taught to use it in our schools.
We need your help to change this. Vision 5K is an event being hosted by a unique partnership of five organizations that serve people of all ages who are blind and visually impaired, with the goal of raising awareness and funds for the visually impaired and blind people in our communities, in our state, and beyond.
