|Thank you for coming to our Team Challenge fundraising page! In just a matter of months I plan to compete in the Virginia Wine Country Half Marathon on June 2, 2012 for the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA).
Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are autoimmune deficiency diseases of the digestive tract that affect 1.4 million Americans. Symptoms vary in each patient but can be very painful and very often lead to life altering surgery. Currently there are NO CURES for these diseases. That is why I have committed to help CCFA change lives and find a cure for these diseases through my fundraising efforts.
I hope you will consider supporting my training and fundraising efforts. I am inspired to do this by my boyfriend Ron Belotti who was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis two years ago. This disease has greatly impacted our daily lives and it pains me to watch him suffer from it.
Here is Ron's story from his point of view:
"Like many diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis or Crohn’s Disease, the first symptoms were the most life changing and unexpected. For me it happened while I was in college. It was in my junior year at George Mason University that I experienced sudden painful cramps every single time I had something to eat or drink. It was utterly embarrassing having to run to the bathroom all day long, and even worse, not having a clue what was wrong with me. During my first hospital visit I was told that I have a mild case of pancreatitis. It wasn’t until the next hospital visit that I was told I have Ulcerative Colitis.
I was prescribed medication and would find out like all who suffer from this disease that it may not work and could even make symptoms worse. To this day I still have not found a medication that works for more than a few months. Just when I start to feel better, a relapse sends a chilling wake up call, letting me know my body is still gripped by this disease. After two years of living with this disease I am still embarrassed to talk about it. My wonderful girlfriend has convinced me that it is better to talk about it than to keep the truth in the shadows, and we have decided to join the fight to help find a cure for these two terrible diseases."
Thank you in advance for your support and we will keep you updated on our progress throughout the next several months.
