Running for all our families...
Wow, with my Team Challenge mates I have completed the 13.1-mile Virginia Wine Country Half Marathon on June 4th, BUT I still need your support this week to meet my fund raising goal for research leading to improved treatment options and a cure for Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis.
Four years ago at age 17 my daughter was diagnosed with Crohn's, and I have several relatives with Ulcerative Colitism and recently learned of older family history. This raised my parental awareness to a panic. The panic is gone, my daughter has graduated with honors showing a strength that makes me proud, and now I have committed to doing what I can to contribute to a solution.
Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are collectively known as inflammatory bowel diseases. Crohn's disease is a chronic (ongoing) lifelong disorder that causes inflammation of the digestive or gastrointestinal (GI) tract, often resulting in permanent tissue damage requiring re-section surgery. Ulcerative colitis on the other hand, affects only the colon. The inflammation involves the entire rectum and extends up the colon in a continuous manner, also resulting in re-section surgery.

It is estimated that as many as 1.4 million Americans have IBD; however, many more suffer in silence due to potential embarrassment and alienation. Crohn's disease may occur in people of all ages, but is often diagnosed first with adolescents and young adults. On average, people are diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in their mid-30s, although the disease can occur at any age.

I promised to raise $3,500 in donations to The Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America in addition to running the 1/2 marathon. I have met my running goals completing the 1/2 marathon with 10 minute miles, :) but regretfully not my financial goals. :-(

I hope you agree with me about the importance of this cause as I need your contributions to meet my pledge goal. Every week I have met more friends who have some form of IBD or a just diagnosed family member, reminding me my daughter has a lifetime of Crohn's to live with. Please help support our mission by giving generously.

A minimum of 82 cents per dollar raised by CCFA goes directly to research and patient support, and your contribution is tax deductible. If your company matches charitable contributions, please include matching forms with your donation. Your good wishes and positive vibes sustained me in training, and I heard your 'yahoos' as I cross the finish line two weeks ago. I now need your donations to complete this circle for me, my daughter, and my C&C friends.
Sincerely and with love, Peter Fitzpatrick
