| Each year about 70,000 young adults are diagnosed with cancer in the US alone. People like you and me will hear the phrase that will forever change their lives "You have cancer". And despite the tremendous advances in science, the mortality rate for this age group has remained the same for the last 30 years. As a two-time cancer survivor I am among the lucky ones and I feel that it is my personal responsibility not only to share my story but to raise money for those who are fighting for their lives now. Over the last few months I’ve lost some great friends – all younger than me – and although nothing will ever bring them back, there are still many others than can be helped. That is why I’ve joined the Ulman Foundation, an organization that focuses on helping adolescents and young adults cope with this horrible disease by providing help and support free of charge. It’s my commitment to my friends Thalita, Sandro, Felippe and Daniel, who are no longer here but whose spirits will live with us forever.
A cada ano cerca de 70 mil jovens recebem o diagnóstico de câncer nos EUA. Não há dados exatos no Brasil. Pessoas como eu e você vão ouvir a frase que mudará suas vidas para sempre “Você tem câncer”. Apesar dos avanços da ciência, a taxa de mortalidada nesta faixa etária permanece a mesma há 30 anos. Depois de ter enfrentado a doença duas vezes, tenho muita sorte, e por isto me sinto reponsável não só por dividir a minha história, mas por arrecadar fundos para aqueles que lutam por suas vidas agora. Nos últimos meses, perdi amigos – todos mais jovens do que eu – e mesmo sabendo que nada os trará de volta, há outros jovens que podem ser ajudados. Foi por isto que me juntei à Ulman Foundation, uma organização que ajuda adolescentes e jovens a lidar com esta doença terrível oferecendo ajuda e apoio gratuitos. Este é meu compromisso para com meus amigos Thalita, Sandro, Felippe e Daniel, que não estão mais aqui, mas cujo espírito de luta vai viver conosco para sempre. |
